Banking, loans and insurance in Quebec

Quebec has its own financial regulator, the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), which insures deposits at Quebec institutions such as Desjardins caisses. Bodily injury from car accidents is covered by the public SAAQ plan, while property damage coverage is bought from private insurers.

Deposit protection

The AMF's deposit insurance covers eligible deposits at authorized Quebec institutions up to CAD 100,000 per category. Federally regulated banks are covered by CDIC.

Auto insurance

The SAAQ public plan covers bodily injury for everyone, regardless of fault. Civil liability for property damage, at least CAD 50,000, must be bought from a private insurer.

Sales and property tax

Quebec charges 9.975% QST plus 5% GST. Each municipality collects a property transfer duty, often called the welcome tax, after a purchase. Quebec residents file a separate provincial tax return with Revenu Québec.
